Wickedly fun

Okay I can't go to bed...I am now hooked on a disturbing yet wonderful show. If you get a chance to catch it on Discover Channel the "Machines of Malice" show is just wow.

The show not only tells you about the machines developed to torture and kill others but how these devices helped to changed the way we engineer things and push technology forward.

The iron bull, iron maiden, the wicker man, the Opega of Lavis, the rach, the thumb biter, the crucifix...it's just wow. I mean wedges, lifts, torque were all highly developed during the development of this incredibly destructive and cruel machines.

And once more the computer models break it down to where I can instantly identify all parts and understand how each part works to make the machine function. It's crazy and makes me want to draw...really badly.

Seriously wickedly inntrigueing show XD
I am posting here because our outreach budget is lo-fi (basically me posting stuff on the internet at 2am...)  Kimya is great live... you prob heard her music in the Juno movie.  if you liked her there, you'll find her awesomeness grows as you listen to her other stuff.  She's really great for doing this benefit show at my son's school, too.  This is my 15 yo son's 4th year at the Village Free School, and it's been amazing for him, and this kind of fundraising helps keep the school affordable so that it's accessible to people of many incomes.  If you know a likely audience, help us spread the word about this show.  Thanks.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kimya Dawson, a Seattle artist and musical inspiration featured in the hit movie Juno, will play in Portland, Oregon on October 18th to benefit the Village Free School. Opening for Kimya is the critically acclaimed Jonah Matranga of the bands Far, onelinedrawing, and now solo performing across the globe.

The show will begin at 1pm at 8660 SE Foster Road in the "Freedom Theatre" of the dynamic school they are playing to support. Price is $15.00 for people 18 to 100 and $5.00 for people 5 - 17. People under the age of 5 are free. Additional donations to the Village Free School are welcome! Seating is general admission and includes floor (front rows) and folding chair (back of theater) seating- feel free to bring a pillow- we'll provide blankets to sit on to make it more cozy.

Tickets will go on sale online on Monday, September 22nd at www.villagefreeschool.org. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door.

Kimya Dawson is one of those rare birds that make you feel like she needs you as much as you need her. Her songs make you feel needed and important. And her fans/friends have been doing the same for her. Since the release of early Moldy Peaches recordings she has been hearing people say "thanks for making me realize that I am not the only one out there who feels like this" and to this she replies "thanks for making me realize that I am not the only one out there who feels like this". www.kimyadawson.com

Jonah Matranga is a man who needs little in the way of introductions. Matranga's influence looms large over today's post-hardcore scene. Currently residing in San Francisco, for the first time in his illustrious career Matranga is intent on going it alone under his own name. His most recent solo album is titled And. www.jonahmatranga.com

The Village Free Choir, a mixed ages group of people who love the free school, will offer a short opening for the featured artists, and this will also be the opening release of their new CD, Big Enough To Fly.

I sometimes wonder if I don't come off as something of a scatterbrained brute. I'll explain...you see I've basically torn up the apartment in order to get things organzed, clean and gone through.

So things are all over. I've moved the 36" tv into our room...which I'm actually surprised I could carry the almost 200 pound TV by myself and moved the entertainment center and tables and such.

Well when the roomies get here I have a end table and the 26" tv blocking there room. So I picked up the TV and by the time Kevin has turned around, while he is offering to move the tv for me...he turns and his eyes are wide as I carry it past him. And what is the first thing he says? "God I wouldn't want to pick a fight with you in the bar." (he's a bouncer) And I of corse laugh set the tv down and go and pick up the solid wood end table that ways easily 75 pounds and haul it out.

I don't think I've seen a guy, especially a big guy like him look so impressed...though he did offer me a job as a female bouncer! LOLZ But now I feel like a bit of a burly ape...though I usually when I am caught man handling or using brute force to get shit done. Dad always did say I should have been a man, I would have done well at football.

...what is worse Kevin wants to actually try to do a wrestle match with me after hearing teh match I had with Kathleen and how I lifted her up on one leg and held her there till she gave in...don't ask it started as a tickle fight and yeah...I think the roomate situation will be interesting.

While this is pretty much a server version of Windows Vista, you can convert it to function just like a desktop version of Vista.  So, pretty much a free, legal copy of Windows Vista for being a student.

Conversion guide: http://www.win2008workstation.com/wordpress/

-----------------------------------

The ISO download from DreamSpark is for 32-bit only. However, if you want the 64-bit version. Download the trial from Microsoft. Install the 64-bit version without a serial. Once installed, use the serial provided by DreamSpark to activate.

I've been using Server2008 x64 on my lone "client" desktop, NOT as a server, since RC3 in January. Note that Vista and Server2008 are both really "Windows 6." They just have a few different apps included, and some install off/on by default depending on the target customers. Almost all drivers and apps I use for Server2008 x64 are Vista x64 drivers and apps. Server 2008 is a bit faster and more stable than Vista, because most of the pretty-stuff and additional toys/gadgets are off by default. An example is you must turn on the sound after you install Server2008, it's not on by default. Another example is IE is blocked from 'Net access, you must turn off the security block. Also, to use "Windows Media Player" you must turn it on through a features panel. Give me Server2008 x64 over ANY other OS, thank you!

Wow. I have to say that Heroes is about 80 different flavors of suck. It's a grotesque incredible (in the worst way) hodge-podge of overwrought crap. It makes no sense of any kind. It's dream sequences can't be separated from its hallucinations. Though both seem more coherent than its plot. There are likely more than a dozen soap operas that make more sense.

At this point there's only 1 solution I can think of for their temporal/causality issues - and that steady-state multi-dimensional Multiverse. I've no problem with that as a solution, but it relegates their plotlines to dust, and makes Peter look a pathetic ass for abandoning Miss Ireland in a parallel universe... And all the people "4 Years in the Future" should have beards like the Mirror, Mirror Mr. Spock. God knows there's no way any of them have any relation to the characters we know...

I told [info]media_junkie the other day that this show doesn't even deserve my speculations. I'm tired of my speculations being so much better than the show itself. But I must say that right now my speculation is that I'm done with this steaming piece of garbage show.

Hello! My name is Theresa. I'm 24 years old and have suffered from anxiety disorder and panic attacks since the age of 17. I've been on meds since then. I'm currently on Celexa but am slowly weaning off.

Has anyone tried Lucinda Basset's Attacking Anxiety and Depression program? I ordered it in the beginning of September and am on my second week. The program is pretty pricey - 8 payments of $70. But I am so sick of my anxiety standing in the way of fully enjoying my life that I decided to try it, despite the expense. My journal is exclusively devoted to my daily observations of working with the program- if anyone is interested feel free to add me!

Apartment hunting sucks.

  • Oct. 6th, 2008 at 8:47 PM
Ok, fair DPers, I've got a scenario here.

You're apartment hunting. You find one you like. It's vacant in the timeframe you need. Score! You apply, pay the app fee, get approved and make with the leasing.

OR

You're apartment hunting. You find one you like. There's no vacancy in the timeframe you need. The manager puts you on a waiting list.

Today I encountered this one:

You find an apartment you like. There's no vacancy in the timeframe you need. You ask to be put on the waiting list. The manager tells you that first you have to pay the (nonrefundable) application fee and get approved before you'll be added to the list.

Huh?

The leasing agent also told me that the rent prices change daily. Seriously?

I'm not asking for much, but I refuse to spend cash monies to apply for an apartment that might not even exist...

That said, any leads you have on good Tigard apartments would be most appreciated. Horror stories, love stories, whatever you got.

I was puttering around youtube late last night, watching videos and generally sighing sadly at being unable to attend a live concert, and found this:

cut for embedded video )

...which led to THIS, which is a higher-quality version of the same thing, and from that to THIS SITE, which doesn't officially open until the 10th of this month. I feel so very dorky and accomplished, in such a good way. I've never before discovered any of Hirasawa's projects 'before the fact', as it were. I'm sure some of you have probably already seen these, but I still feel like a cool kid.

Also! My copy of Phonon2550 Live came in the mail a couple weeks ago. Since I don't know how kosher it is in this comm to simply go ahead and share music, instead I'll say I'll quite happily upload it for anyone who wants it terribly and for some reason can't buy it. ^^

Does anyone know where I can find HP Sauce locally? We used to get it from Belmont Station, but last we checked they no longer carried it.

East side preferred, but I'll go anywhere for the tasty, tasty sauce.

"The Coup Has Happened"

Folks, at the risk of being flamed for posting such an incendiary piece of video, I'd like to share this compelling warning from the brilliant Naomi Wolf with the PDXLJ community. It goes without saying that Portland has a proud tradition of activism and it's obvious that that fact has not gone entirely unnoticed, so I feel this message is particularly relevant to us.

Also, a warning. This video is pretty scary. I'd skip it if you're one to get upset easily. Seriously.

Ugh.  I just drove around to a million different places and can't find what I want.  Help me DPers!

Is there anywhere that is like Bar Avignon but with wifi and outlets (old laptop doesn't hold a charge).  That won't be offended that I want to work on my 'puter?  I would like some alcohol, but I need to work too.  Good food would be a bonus.  Lots of places closed on Monday -- tried Press Club, Broder, up and down Division and Clinton.

It could even be someplace like Panera, if only Panera had wine.

And...go!

Rage/anxiety

  • Oct. 6th, 2008 at 10:32 PM
It's been maybe 2 1/2 weeks since coming off of my meds. I was on Effexor for a little over a year (on 150mgs) and Wellbutrin for a week or so... I felt that I did not need meds anymore and that the side effects caused more anxiety and depression than I could handle. I was doing fine for the first week or so (aside from feeling violently ill from withdrawls) and now it is day two of having these rage/anxiety fits (the only thing I can think to call them) where I just get so upset that I feel Read more... )Any tips or ideas regarding my current situation?

Thanks a lot.

Bargain Sales?

  • Oct. 6th, 2008 at 6:30 PM
So, world credit markets are still frozen and goods like cars and appliances aren't really moving. When are places like Sears going to start having uber-awesome sales to get stock moving at all? Is any appliance store selling stuff cheap to peeps with cash?
